Exploring Immersive Horizons: Our Visit to MSLETB XRHub Sligo & The Future of Inclusive Learning

A warm welcome to MSLETB XRHub Sligo
At BCR Comply, we value digital accessibility, regional innovation and the technology community across Sligo and the West of Ireland. Our recent visit to MSLETB XRHub Sligo in Strandhill offered an opportunity to explore how emerging tools could support education, vocational training and community learning.
It was a visit full of curiosity and practical demonstrations, bringing together immersive experiences, digital design and physical learning tools.
Hands-on technology with National Learning Network learners
Alongside learners from the National Learning Network, we explored demonstrations that encouraged participation and discussion. Trying an unfamiliar tool together creates opportunities to ask questions, share observations and connect a digital experience with a practical idea.
The images from our visit show headset experiences as well as tablet-based demonstrations, 3D design, printing and tactile models. These are distinct tools: extended reality (XR) can create or overlay digital environments, while 3D printing turns digital designs into physical objects that people can examine and handle.
The potential for more inclusive learning
Immersive technology can offer additional ways to explore a subject, practise a scenario or visualise a concept. With thoughtful design and appropriate support, it may help some learners engage with material that is harder to communicate through text or a conventional demonstration alone.
Accessibility is not automatic. Individual needs, comfort, equipment, sensory demands and the way an activity is designed all matter. Some people may prefer a screen-based activity or a physical model rather than a headset. Offering alternatives and listening to participants is central to making these experiences genuinely useful.
Likewise, an engaging demonstration does not by itself establish better long-term learning outcomes. The opportunity lies in selecting suitable tools, supporting learners and assessing what works in the particular setting.
Creativity across digital and physical tools
Seeing digital design alongside 3D printing and tactile objects was a reminder that innovation need not rely on one format. A model on a screen, a printed mechanism and a hands-on activity can each offer a different way to investigate an idea.
For our team, the visit was an opportunity to learn from the people creating and using these experiences—not an announcement of XR features in BCR Comply. We welcome the conversations that connect local businesses, educators and community organisations.
Thank you to our hosts and fellow participants
Our thanks to Mary Bruen and the entire MSLETB XRHub Sligo team for their warm welcome at the Strandhill facility. Thank you also to SocoLab for contributing to the session, and to all the participating learners for their enthusiasm, curiosity and willingness to share the experience.
